Home Insulation Research Study
The importance of proper insulation installation is reinforced by a laboratory study conducted for the Civil Engineering Laboratory, US Navy, by the Johns Mansville Research & Development Center.
One conclusion was that small gaps in ceiling insulation lead to a greater loss in overall thermal performance than most installers realize. A 4% void area in R-19 insulation reduced performance 34% (the equivalent of a 50% increase in heat loss). The thermal resistance of a wall with 4% void area in R-11 insulation was reduced 13% (a 15% increase in heat loss).
The purpose of the test program was to determine the effect of insulation deficiencies under winter conditions. The test apparatus was a guarded hot box (ASTM C236 test procedure).
